Study Abroad Scholarships
Santander Universities has partnered with the Providence College Center for International Studies to provide funding for students participating in international programs. Two distinct types of awards are available: The Diversity Scholarship and The Global Service-Learning Grant. Applications open one month before the deadline.
Santander Diversity Scholarship for Under-Represented Students in Study Abroad
This scholarship targets under-represented study abroad students who are participating in credit-bearing programs for the semester, academic year, or summer. The eligibility categories include:
- Students from Under-Represented Racial and Ethnic Groups
- First-Generation College Students
- Students with Physical or Learning Disabilities
- International Students (F-1 Visa status)
- Non-Traditional Students (Click the link for a definition)

Santander Global Service-Learning Grant
This grant aids individuals who are engaging in a service project abroad during the summer and groups who are part of a semester course-embedded international service trip during the winter intersession or spring break.

Providence College students are encouraged to review the following internal scholarships for study abroad. Funding for these scholarships has been made possible by Providence College alumni and their family and friends.
Program Provider Scholarships
Most program providers offer scholarship opportunities to students who are participating in their study abroad programs. Deadlines vary, but typically fall around your program’s application deadline. If your provider is not listed below, search for available scholarship opportunities on their website or contact Grace Cleary.

General Scholarship Programs
The Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation was established by her family in loving memory. The mission is to create a permanent endowment and award scholarships to qualified students for the travel and study abroad, based on merit, personal qualities and/or financial need.
The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Gilman Scholarship is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

- Application Deadline for Fall and Academic Year Study Abroad: Early March of the same year
- Application Deadline for Summer : Early March 1 of the same year
Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Elisha Mowry-Bridgham Award
The Providence Branch of the English-Speaking Union offers this $1,500 award to sophomores and juniors concentrating in any humanities discipline at a college in Rhode Island and studying in the UK or Ireland for a portion of their junior year. Freeman Awards for Study in Asia
Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

- Application Deadline for Spring Study Abroad: October of the previous year
General scholarships are offered for U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying abroad for at least four weeks in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Dedicated scholarships are also available.
Providence College Fr. Smith Fellowship Program
The Fr. Philip A. Smith, O.P., Student Fellowships for Study and Service Abroad are awarded on a competitive basis to rising juniors and seniors. The Fellowships enable students to undertake summer study or service at Catholic and Dominican sites outside the continental United States. The Fellowships cover travel, living, and incidental expenses, and provide Fellows with a modest stipend. The Fellowships are funded through the generosity of, among others, members of the Providence College Board of Trustees, current and former.

Diversity Abroad Study Abroad Scholarship & Grant Directory – Provides a list of scholarship and grant opportunities for specific programs and locations. Awards range from $500 – $9,000.
FinAid – FinAid is a comprehensive database of student financial aid information, with a large portion devoted to study abroad funding.
IIE Passport Study Abroad Funding – This funding resource allows you to search a comprehensive database by country or subject to find study abroad scholarships, fellowships, and grants applicable to your study abroad experience.
International Education Financial Aid – IEFA is a resource for financial aid, college scholarship and grant information for US and international students wishing to study abroad. At this site, you will find a comprehensive college scholarship search and grant listings plus international student loan programs and other information to promote study abroad.
